5 Steps to Creating the Perfect Picnic
What is more summer than going on a picnic? Picnics are a terrific and unique way to enjoy time together as a family while making memories to last a lifetime. If you aren’t sure how to go about hosting, check out my 5 Steps to Creating the Perfect Picnic below. As always it’s important to remember not to take yourself to seriously. Picnics are about uninterrupted fun with family or friends, or even all by yourself. Enjoy the simple things and you will have no trouble creating the perfect picnic.
1. Choose a Picnic Basket
It’s not a proper picnic without a picnic basket. However, it’s important to remember you will need a cooler for refrigerated foods. As cute as picnic baskets can be, remember to bring ice packs if needed. That being said, have some fun choosing your perfect picnic basket. You can find all sorts of options at thrift stores and garage sales, so get creative! The bigger the basket the better in my opinion.
2. Find the Ideal Location
Picnics are better in the shade. Try looking for a small grove of trees by a body of water (a lake, river, or ocean). The sound of water always brings an extra layer of calm to a picnic. Are there are picnic tables near your ideal location? Then be sure to bring a table cloth. If not you will need a blanket to lay on the ground. Make sure to bring a blanket that’s big enough for you and your guests. No one wants ants in their pants. You could even go the extra mile and pack a couple pillows for lounging.
3. Keep it Simple
Don’t bring a four course meal on a picnic. Keep the menu simple with fruit, crackers, cheese, etc. Food you can easily eat with your fingers without causing a mess is ideal for a picnic. For more food ideas, check out the Be Still and Write Pinterest page. The perfect picnic is low maintenance and eco-friendly. Remember to pick up all your trash when you are done eating. Seriously, don’t be that person.
4. Bring Yard Games
Simple yard games like frisbee or football can add some fun to your perfect picnic. Get creative and stow away whatever game you and your guests might enjoy. I like frisbees the best, because it’s such a throwback to childhood. Picnics are about simpler times, slowing down and enjoying a meal in nature. Having a picnic with girlfriends? Ask everyone to pack a handy craft like knitting or watercolors. Picnicking solo? Then bring your favorite book. The possibilities are endless!
5. Plan Ahead
The ultimate key to the perfect picnic is planning ahead. Check the weather, find a location, and decide what food to bring at least the day before. It’s okay if things go wrong. Life is messy and that’s part of the fun of a picnic outdoors. However, your afternoon out with friends need not be ruined by surprise rain or spilling wine on the picnic blanket. Just be prepared and think ahead. Then you can have all the fun and be present with the people you love. For more ideas on how to be prepared, download my free picnic checklist below!
