1. Klaus
Is Klaus a Christmas movie? Yes. However, I would and do watch this film any time of the year. The true magic of Klaus is difficult to describe, but it is the most beautiful story of the origin of Santa Claus I have ever seen. I have yet to make it through one screening of this film without tears. The movie is funny, thought-provoking, and spectacularly fresh. If you are looking for something to watch with your family that is nothing but quality, then I highly recommend Klaus.
2. Christopher Robin
If you were a fan of Winnie the Pooh as a child, then you will fall in love with Christopher Robin. This movie gave me flashbacks of my mom reading to me before bed or playing make believe in my backyard. Christopher Robin is the perfect film to watch if you have imaginative kiddos or if you would like to share a bit of your past. It’s a personal favorite and a very soothing movie.
3. The Biggest Little Farm
The Biggest Little Farm is a documentary, an 8 year long journey of a couple who created a farm the old fashioned way. Throughout the documentary they work to build a self-sustaining ecosystem, and it is a wonder to behold. If you love the outdoors or nature documentaries then you will love this film. What’s more, you can visit Apricot Lane Farms in person and follow their continued journey online!
4. Little Women
Little Women is the perfect film to watch with your older kids, and not just the girls. It’s also the ideal film to watch if you’ve read the book as a family. Little Women is set in a simpler, slower time in history in which ribbons were considered a valuable and cherish gift. Ice cream was rare and expensive. Kids traded lemons in school and played outside year round. Hygge living is all about slowing down and simplicity. Little Women is, therefore, the ideal Hygge Movie for Family Movie Night.
5. We Bought a Zoo
If you are looking for a movie that will make you and your family dream big dreams, then We Bought a Zoo is the movie for you. Benjamin Mee and his two kids buy and move to a run-down zoo and work to make it operational again. Owning and living in a zoo is still very much a dream of mine. Think about it. How incredible would that be? To wake up every day to the sound of the wild outside your front door would be a dream come true. If you agree, then We Bought a Zoo is the hygge movie for you!
6. Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The content of the Narnia franchise can seem complex and at times very dark. However, there is nothing like an old fashioned tale of good verses evil. Narnia parallels scripture, namely Christ dying for us on the cross. For example, Aslan dies in place of Edmund and is raised again to win the war against the evil queen. If you are looking for a way to explain the depth of scripture to your children in a more relatable way, this film might be the right choice for you. It’s also an encouraging and hope-filled movie that is ideal for a hygge movie night at home.
