1. Finding I Am by Lysa TerKeurst
Finding I Am: How Jesus Fully Satisfies the Cry of Your Heart by Lysa TerKeurst explores the seven “I am” statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. The subject matter is dense, but not overwhelming. In the video portion of the study Lysa is on location in Israel. I sometimes forget that the places in scripture are in fact real locations in the world. As Lysa says, “I truly believe one of the most powerful things we can do to help us more fully understand the Bible is to learn about the cultural context it was written in (pg.77).”
I couldn’t agree more. This study brought scripture to life for me.
What I also love about Finding I Am is that it can be done on your own time or with a group. There are optional sections at the end of each week of homework that can be utilized if the reader would like to go deeper in study.
Need more proof that this is an excellent choice for your next Bible study? Take a look at my book. The cover is loose from the spine, I’ve dog-eared pages and written all over the place. You can tell the quality of a Bible study by the condition of the book at its conclusion.
2. James by Jen Wilkin
I cannot say enough good things about Jen Wilkin. While I was in college I stumbled upon her teaching materials and podcast and for weeks it was all I listened to. I’d go on a six mile run and listen to her teach through Genesis, Joshua, Judges, Hebrews, etc. It was the first time I fell in love with learning scripture. Not just scripture itself, but taking my heart knowledge and allowing it to fuel my head knowledge.
You can find Jen’s studies on Lifeway, but some are free to download, like James!
Jen is a big supporter of biblical literacy, so her studies are a bit more dense that others I’ve encountered. However, there are lessons I learned in the study of the book of James that I will never forget. Such as: learning to control my tongue, how to be impartial, hearing a word from scripture and living it out, or how to be patient in suffering. James might be dense, but it’s worth every second of effort and study.
There are several other brilliant studies written by Jen, including Joshua and Judges that are currently unavailable for download, but should be up sometime soon. I will post an update when I know where they have gone. For now, you can find the link to the James study download HERE.
3. One In A Million by Priscilla Shirer
One in a Million: A Journey to Your Promised Land by Priscilla Shirer is written as both a book and a seven session Bible study. One in a Million is based on the story of the Exodus and how out of two million adults of ancient Israel, only two made it safely into the Promised Land. That’s about one in a million. So, the question is, how do those one in a million’s do it?
I read the book in my first year of marriage and could not put it down. The concept is empowering and motivational. Are you looking for a good read that doesn’t necessarily have homework? Have you been feeling discouraged and ordinary? This study is for you.
4. Brave by Angela Thomas-Pharr
Brave: Honest Questions Women Ask by Angela Thomas-Pharr was a delightful breath of fresh air for me. For any type-A people, the structure of the study itself might seem a little visually overwhelming. Give it time, though. I promise the material is worth it.
Each week of study in Brave discusses a different statement. For example, “I am worn out” or “I am undisciplined.” This format allows each week to be a separate component. The topics don’t build off of one another making this study an easy one to do on your own. Or, if you are walking through Brave with a group and miss a week, it’s has less impact on the study as a whole.
Angela’s teaching is always so vulnerable and real. If you are looking for a down-to-earth Bible study that relates to any woman at any stage, I highly recommend this one.
5. Seamless by Angie Smith
Seamless: Understanding the Bible as One Complete Story by Angie Smith is another study I could not put down. For weeks it was all I talked about. First of all I am a sucker for a map. Not sure why, but if the study has a map then I am usually all in.
Second, for me this Bible study was not heavy. The chosen stories in scripture are ones I have studied before, but Angie presented them in a fresh new light. The familiar became brand new to me. Seamless shows the thread connecting the people, places and promises of the Bible. Whether you’ve grown up in the church or looking for your first Bible study, Seamless is for you!
Finally, there are two versions of this study. One is written for adults and another for teen girls. Though I have not read the teen version of this study I have heard excellent reviews. For any moms out there who want to find a study to do with their teenage daughter, you might give this a try!
6. Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer
Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God Speaks by Priscilla Shirer was written for those difficult seasons when you can’t seem to hear God speak. Do you ever wonder if you are hearing God’s voice or just the voice in your head? Are you unclear what God’s will is for your life? This study was written to help you find greater confidence, clarity and discernment when it comes to the voice of God.
Priscilla is one of my favorite Bible teachers. I first heard her speak at a conference in St. Louis, and her teaching captivated me. When Priscilla teaches it feels as though I am sitting across the coffee table with a good friend just talking about Jesus. Her passion for the Word of God and communicating it’s truth to others is contagious.
I will say Discerning the Voice of God was a study I would recommend doing as a group. The topic of discernment is one I find is best discussed with a group. It is a vulnerable and thought-provoking subject matter.
7. Life Lessons From Women in the Bible by Rhonda Harrington Kelley
Who are your role models? Is it a celebrity, social media influencer, a Parent or friend? Several years ago as a young bride I realized I did not have a Christian woman nearby that could help me learn how to be a wife. As a woman, how do I live in a way that honors Christ?
After a lot of searching for that role model, I finally realized I had all the resources I needed in the Bible. Scripture is filled with dozens of examples of strong, brave, faithful women who live their lives for Christ. Life Lessons From Women in the Bible by Rhonda Harrington Kelley is an excellent study resource with examples of these women. If you feel lost in how to grow in your faith, I highly recommend reading the stories of the women in scripture. They were given by God for a purpose.
