7 Ways to Appreciate People and Say Thank You
When I was in college I took a class on creativity I thought was going to be a complete waste of time. However, by the end of the semester I was so grateful to have taken it. In the class we were given the assignment of sending a thank you card to someone from your past you wanted to thank. I sent a card to my favorite elementary school teacher and received the most hear-warming response. Showing someone you care is more important than we often realize, and if you have trouble like I sometimes do, below are 7 Ways to Appreciate People and Say Thank You.
1. Send a Hand-Written Card
One of the most under-rated ways to appreciate someone is to send a hand-written card. No, not a funny card you found at Target and signed your name to. Pick a blank card or sheet of paper and spend some time writing a nice long paragraph expressing your gratitude. No one sends mail now a days, and it’s so fun to receive mail that isn’t spam or a bill! Go the extra mile with your card by stamping it with a wax seal. It makes the gesture even more special and dare I say a little fancy?
2. Have Flowers Delivered to Their Work or Home
I’m not a flower girl most of the time, but every now and then it is nice to receive a spontaneous bouquet of my favorite flowers. Spontaneous is the key. Everyone is expecting flowers on their anniversary or Valentine’s Day, but surprise your friend or family member with flowers on a random day of the year. It’s especially nice to get flowers in front of other people at the office, because let’s face it… we all love recognition. Right?
3. Send a Special Care Package
Go a step father than sending a bouquet of flowers by creating a care package specifically for your friend or family member. You could fill a box with snacks, a few of their favorite movies, books, or an inside joke of some kind. Better yet, send them a little box of hygge! Whatever hygge items you can find (candles, a blanket, etc), place them in cute box and drop it on their doorstep. Now that’s a care package!
4. Do Something Little, but Thoughtful
Do you have a friend who is overwhelmed by their schedule and children? Offer to take the kids for the afternoon or drop off a prepped dinner. Do they not have time to mow the lawn? Surprise them by mowing while they are at work. Are they constantly out of stamps? Pick up an extra book while you are at the grocery store. Just listen and respond in kind.
5. Make Breakfast in Bed
Of the 7 Ways to Appreciate People and Say Thank You, this one is certainly dedicated to people you live with. Don’t show up at your boss’s house to make breakfast in bed. That’s weird. However, if you want to show your parents, your spouse or even your sibling that you appreciate them, breakfast in bed is a unique and sweet gesture. What’s better than breakfast food while you’re all tucked in bed? Nothing. I agree. Check out the 8 Elements for the perfect breakfast in bed for more ideas.
6. Send a Quick Text or Give Them a Call
If you don’t have too much time on your hands a good old fashioned text or phone call is always a good way to show appreciation. I prefer a call over a text, because it’s slightly more personal, but you do you. If your friend, family member, or coworker doesn’t answer take the time to leave them a nice, well thought out voicemail. I have voicemails in my phone saved for years, because they brought such a smile to my face at the time.
7. Spend Time in Prayer
Prayer is the most important of the 7 Ways to Appreciate People and Say Thank You. It’s the most important thing we can do for others period. Take time out of your day to pray for the people in your life. Not just a few minutes while you are rushing out the door, but a block of designated time. Sure, you won’t get the recognition or appreciation for doing so, but that isn’t the point. Spending time in prayer is the best way we can say thank you.
