1. Strengthening Your Marriage by Wayne A Mack
My husband and I walked through this book together during pre-marital counselling, and we now give it as a gift to every newly engaged couple we know. This book is a MUST read for all newlyweds, but I would also recommend it to those of you who have been married for decades. The most impactful portion of this study is the unit on communication. Good communication will transform any relationship.
Strengthening Your Marriage is deeply anchored in scripture and split into eight units. It’s perfect for a two month study for you and your spouse or soon-to-be spouse. I suggest revisiting the book once a year, just glance through the material to refresh your mind. Again, cannot say enough good things about this book. 10/10 recommend.
2. The Hour That Changes the World: A Practical Plan for Personal Prayer by Dick Eastman
Christ should be the foundation of any marriage or relationship, and prayer is a very integral part of that foundation. My husband and I actually began our relationship as prayer partners, and I believe it created a firm foundation for our future marriage. You may have seen the triangle illustration pictured below. The closer you draw to God the closer you draw to one another.
With that in mind, The Hour that Changes the World will revolutionize your relationship with prayer as a married couple. If you struggle knowing what to do in your quiet time or what to say to God, this is the book for you.
Romans 12:12 says “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Disagreements in marriage often lead to bickering, gossiping with friends or simply stewing in anger. The first response should always be prayer. Give your frustration to the Lord. The Hour That Changes the World will help you and your significant other to prioritize prayer and is an excellent book for any and all couples.
3. Idols of the Heart: Learning to Long for God Alone by Elyse Fitzpatrick
If you and your spouse are looking for a challenging read, I suggest Idols of the Heart. This book is perhaps the most convicting of the The Top 5 Best Books for Young Married Couples list. Fitzpatrick does an excellent job of creating conversation. Reading this book with your spouse will certainly create conversation, because we all have idols. We just might not realize what those idols are.
Idols can grow from good things God has given us including social media, our health, career, family, savings account or property. Fitzpatrick says is best “when [God’s] blessings become our god, then we’ve fallen into idolatry.” This book is an excellent read for spouse’s not only because it creates conversation, but it helps with accountability. It is important to be surrounded by support when confronted with an idol.
4. You and Me Forever: Marriage in Light of Eternity by Francis and Lisa Chan
Francis and Lisa Chan have a contagious fire in their hearts for Jesus. It’s a fire that will catch in the hearts of you and your spouse when you read You and Me Forever. Another thing I love about this book is that both Francis and Lisa are speaking, so we get to hear from both sides of the relationship.
You and Me Forever is about having a great marriage by not focusing on marriage. When we put God first, everything else tends to fall into place. Francis and Lisa discuss topics like learning to fight well and not wasting your marriage. However, the most powerful topic for me was running the race as a team. The chaos of life can lead us to lose focus on our purpose as a single person or a spouse. You and Me Forever is an excellent book to realign perspective on the true purpose of our lives as Christians.
5. To Live is Christ to Die is Gain by Matt Chandler
In case you haven’t noticed the central theme in this list of the The Top 5 Best Books for Young Married Couples, it is that to live is Christ. Marriage reveals the most selfish parts of our hearts. It’s a mirror to the worst in us. God should be at the center of our marriages. It’s when we are not putting God first that problems arise, take hold, and lay ruin to a holy union.
To Live is Christ to Die is Gain will kick you in the pants, but in the very best way. Chandler makes dense material manageable. The book can be split easily into manageable sections. If you have a busy schedule but still want to read a book with your spouse, this is a great start.
