5 Helpful Scriptures for the Lenten Season
When I was a little girl we attended a Lutheran church, and I have so many fond memories of that time. I especially loved the Lenten season. There was something about preparing your heart and mind for Easter and truly reflecting on the reason for the season. It’s a beautiful thing. Below are 5 Helpful Scriptures for the Lenten Season that I hope will guide you in being more intentional about Easter this year.
1. “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” – Psalm 42:1-2
Traditionally, Lent is a time to honor the 40 days and nights following Christ’s baptism when He went into the wilderness without water and food and was tempted by Satan. Throughout Lent we do what Christ did by fasting, we wrestle with temptation. Giving up something for Lent is birthed from a desire to connect on a deeper level with our Heavenly Father.
2. “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting…” – Matthew 6:16-18
This passage in Matthew is a good reminder about the purpose of fasting. If we are fasting from something (or giving something up) just to be seen doing it, then we are missing the point. We don’t need to advertise what we are choosing to go without. That’s between us and God.
3. “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” -Romans 12:12-13
Fasting is not easy. Throughout the season of Lent I expect to have low days when I just want to give up and go back to the way I was living before, but we must be patient in our affliction and remember why we are participating in Lent in the first place. Jesus died for us.
4. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:6-7
I have a mental list of prayers to bring before God during this season. These prayers have been on my heart and mind for some time, but I haven’t been intentional enough about laying them at His feet. I hope that this season will be a time to continually cast all my anxieties until it becomes second nature to me.
5. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33
Lent reminds us to reflect on what Jesus did when He died on the cross for our sins, but also to celebrate His victory over death. He overcame the world, and in that truth we can find peace.
