1. Fresh Bedding
Clean bedding might seem like an obvious first step in making your guest room more cozy, but it needs to be said. No one wants to sleep on dirty sheets. If the bedding is worn, think about ordering a new set. Otherwise give the sheets, comforter, pillowcases and even the dust ruffle a good wash. I recommend using a sensitive skin detergent, because you never know what allergies your guests may have.
Another important thing to think about is the pillows. Don’t skimp on your guest room and get cheap pillows. People sleep better with a good pillow. It also adds to the coziness factor to have several pillows on the bed.
2. Spare Toiletries
How many times have you gone to stay with a friend or family member and completely forgotten your toothbrush, shampoo or hairbrush? It happens to me all the time. Make your guest room more cozy and have a basket of toiletries available. That way they don’t even need to ask.
3. Good Towels
Again, don’t skimp on the towels for your guest room. Obviously don’t give your guests the stained or frayed leftovers at the back of your linen cabinet. In fact, I recommend buying bath sheets instead of standard towels. They are bigger and much cozier. Don’t be afraid to go the extra mile to make your guest feel at home. Lay a couple on the bed in preparation for their arrival.
4. Quality Mattress
True, a quality mattress can be an expense. However, if you have guests in your home frequently and the mattress is 15+ years old, I recommend getting a new one. The rest of the house could be cozy and inviting, but if the mattress is garbage then all your guests will remember is a bad night’s sleep.
5. Wifi Password
Guests typically don’t want to be a burden, so they will hesitate when asking questions like “What is your Wifi password?” Make it simple for them by putting the password on display in their room or in your kitchen. A chalkboard sign like this one is a quick way to make your guest room more cozy. Try and keep the password relatively simple to type. You can always change it later if you’d like.
6. Extra Blankets
As someone who is constantly cold, I appreciate extra blankets in the guest room. Lay a couple across the end of the bed for decoration or keep some in the closet for your chilly guests. It’s also good to have extra blankets for visitors with kiddos. My nephews like to make a fort on the floor when they stay at my mother’s. Extra blankets come in handy!
7. Phone Charger & Extension Cord
Again, guests can be forgetful. Keep a cell phone charger in your guest room for those just-in-case moments. There’s nothing worse than being away from home and unable to charge your phone. If you want to go the extra mile, keep an Android and iPhone charger. You never know what type of phone visitors may use.
8. Luggage Stand
A luggage stand is a staple in any hotel room, and for good reason. Bending down to the floor to pick through your suitcase can hurt your back, and you can’t keep the bag on the bed while you sleep. Give your guest a break by providing a luggage stand. It’s not only cozy, but classy.
9. Sound Machine
If you live in the city and your guests are from a more rural area, they may not be used to the sound of traffic in the middle of the night. Vise versa, if your guests are from the city and you live in the country they may not be used to silence. Place a small sound machine on the bedside table to add a personal touch to your cozy guest room.
10. Candle or Oil Diffuser
Be careful when choosing a scent for your guest room. Fresh scents are preferred by most guests according to the Sleep Foundation. For example, lavender is soothing scent that is often associated with a good night’s rest. Eucalyptus and ocean scents are also calming. If you prefer an oil diffuser to candles, remember to keep the oils in in your guest room and perhaps a users guide for the diffuser.
11. Real Plant
Greenery is very hygge. It has been shown to boost creativity, reduce stress, and improve air quality. Keeping a live plant in your guest room not only brings a little outside in, but could help put your guests at ease. A bouquet of fresh flowers can also be a beautiful and inviting addition so long as your guest is not allergic. If you can’t have real flowers or a plant then fake greenery is a good secondary option.
12. Floor Length Mirror
There’s nothing worse than getting ready with a tiny mirror. Honestly. Have you ever walked out of the house looking like a fool, because you couldn’t see your whole body in the mirror? Don’t put your poor guests through that horror. Give them a big enough mirror to see their whole body without having to stand far away or on top of the bed. Less stress when getting ready makes for a cozier stay.
13. Waste Paper Basket
A waste paper basket is a simple, but important item for any guest room. Where else do your guests put their trash? Make the basket visible, but decorative so it’s not a distracting eye sore.
14. Reading Material
Add some extra coziness to the space by placing some of your favorite books in the room. If you have a shelf for books, that’s excellent. Otherwise, place a magazine or book of poetry by the bedside table. Do you have guests coming from out of state? Make the reading material customized by adding a guide to the area. Remember, it’s the attention to detail that counts.
15. Soft Robe
Last, but not least I encourage you to get a big, soft robe for your guest room. It’s a little extravagant, but there’s nothing more cozy then wrapping yourself in a robe after a long hot shower. It’s also an unexpected addition that will make your guests feel right at home. After all, the idea of hosting is to make people feel welcome. Remember that and you know How to Make Your Guest Room More Cozy.
