1. Make Your Bed in the Morning
Making your bed might seem like an interesting way to get a better nights sleep, but trust me. It’s much more soothing to slide into a bed ready for sleeping then spend ten minutes sorting through knotted blankets and sheets. Don’t waste your precious rest by leaving your future self an unmade bed. Take a few minutes each morning to prepare your room for better sleep. Make your bed!
3. Establish a Bedtime Routine
Creating an effective bedtime routine is vital for a good night of rest and success the following day. A solid routine can also be instrumental in training your brain for rest that evening. Don’t jump into bed and expect your body and mind to just obey the signal. Give your brain time to wind down, process the day and prepare for sleep. Every bedtime routine is different What’s important is that you keep it the same or similar each night and stay consistent.
2. Wear Actual Pajamas
Of all my sleep tips this is by far the most life changing. At least it was for me. Do you find yourself falling into bed fully clothed at the end of the day? Do you sleep in tight workout clothes or uncomfortable nighties? Go to the store today and buy yourself a nice pair of adult pajamas. Yes, real pajamas like your grandparents or parents used to wear. Like the PJ’s you wore as a kid. Real pajamas. Then only wear this ensemble when you sleep. You will be amazed at the difference a designated PJ set can make on your quality of sleep.
4. Put Away Your Phone
You’ve heard about the importance of no electronics before bed. There’s a reason why doctors recommend you set aside your phone for at least 30 minutes prior to closing your eyes at night. The visual stimulation is not healthy for your brain before sleep. Try reading a book, talking with your spouse, spending time in prayer or writing tomorrows to-do list before bed. Looking at Instagram or watching TV might be tempting, but quality sleep is much more important.
5. Avoid Sleeping In
I know, I know, if you are someone who loves to use the snooze button then you might not like this tip. Sleeping in can actually hurt your rest, especially if you hit the snooze a dozen times in a row. It’s better for your body and mind to just get up at the sound of the alarm. Yes, even snoozing a little extra on the weekends can be a bad idea. The occasional nap or extended sleep might be necessary, but don’t make it a habit. It should be the exception and not the rule.
6. Keep it Dark
If you find yourself waking to the early dawn or bright lights of cars driving past your window, invest in black out curtains, dark shades or even an eye mask. Quality sleep is easier to accomplish in the dark with no distractions for your poor tired eyes. Don’t want to spend money on a new curtain or shade? Try hanging a dark flannel sheet and test it out for a few days. Sleeping in a darkened room can do wonders.
7. Try a Sound Machine
Are you easy startled at night? Are you used to the hum of traffic or the chirp of crickets? Do you have loud neighbors? Try sleeping with a sound machine to drown out the distractions. My husband and I keep one beside our bed in case the neighbors get too rowdy or we need to nap during the day. Sound machines have so many options and settings you can certainly find the right background noise for your perfect night of sleep.
