Why It’s Important to Spend Time in Silence
Recently my mom pointed out that I drive without listening to the radio. She asked how I could stand being in the silence for so long. Honestly, I’ve been practicing getting more comfortable with silence the past few months, so I didn’t even notice the difference. Read below to discover Why It’s Important to Spend Time in Silence.
1. Inspiration
If your surroundings are constantly filled with noise and chaos, it’s much harder to find inspiration let alone finish a full thought. Take it from someone with a very chatty toddler… Inspiration thrives best in silence. If you are a creator who creates new products or content for a living, I highly recommend spending more time in silence. You will be surprised how many more new ideas you can come up with in just half an hour of quiet.
2. Prayer
Spending time alone with God can be done anywhere and anytime. However, there is something special about sitting in complete silence and talking to your Heavenly Father. I feel much more focused on my prayers early in the morning before the sun rises. Spending time in silence is so good for your prayer life.
3. Memory
Studies show that spending just 15 minutes in silence can be beneficial for your memory. In fact, “ten-minute (of) rest in a quiet darkened room boosted recall from 14 to 49%.” Almost 50% of improved recall by simply sitting in the quiet for a while? I will take it.
4. Mood
I have noticed that the more time I am able to spend in silence (processing my thoughts and spending time in prayer) the better my mood. Maybe it’s because I am the mother of a very loud, chatty and adorable toddler. I love her, but man she is loud. Now I don’t have research to prove it, but personally spending time each day in the quiet has greatly improved my overall disposition.
5. Sleep
The final reason Why It’s Important to Spend Time in Silence is to improve your sleep. A 2019 study showed links between poor health and sleeping with the TV on all night. We spend all day in front of screens, which can mess with our melatonin. If you are also falling asleep to the TV each night, you could be putting your health at risk. It’s just too much noise. Creating a calm, quiet environment for your sleep can greatly improve your health. To learn more about how to do that, read the blog posts listed below!
