12 Thanksgiving Books to Read to Your Toddler
It’s time for the final part of my fall book list, 12 Thanksgiving Books to Read to Your Toddler. Curating the books on this list was no easy task. I really think there’s a gap in the market for quality Thanksgiving-themed books. However, we were able to find some gems. Happy reading!
1. The Berenstain Bears
There are three Thanksgiving books in the Berenstain Bears books series. Possibly more, but we only own three. I included them in one point, because they are the same author, but will review them separately below.
Thanksgiving All Around – It’s a lift-a-flap book, which is extra special. Basically you are searching for the turkey.
The Prize Pumpkin – Originally I thought this was more of a fall book, but at the very end they enjoy Thanksgiving dinner together. It’s all about remembering wants most important and not getting caught up in winning.
Thanksgiving Blessings – What I like about this book is there are topic to discuss as a family at the end of the story. Things like, “What lessons did the Pilgrim Bears story teach the cubs about Thanksgiving?”
2. Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson
The friendship between Bear and the other woodland creatures is so precious. They each show up at his home with different food to share and celebrate together. Ugh, so cute.
3. Thanks for Nothing by Ryan Higgins
Bruce is my cranky spirit animal. He tries to make a dinner, but the mice keep ruining all the food, so at the end of the book the animals thank him for nothing, because there is literally nothing to eat. At least they were still polite I guess?
4. Arthur’s Thanksgiving by Marc Brown
Arthur’s Thanksgiving is a cute book about putting on a school play and friends coming together to support one another. I’m not sure they get the real story of the first Thanksgiving correct, so keep that in mind.
5. Just a Special Thanksgiving by Mercer Mayer
I just love all the mischief Little Critters gets into. This book includes stickers, which is fun. It also talks about doing something for those in need, which is important to discuss with our littles.
6. Llama Llama Give Thanks by Anna Dewdney
Llama Llama Give Thanks is a simple book, but you always need a few of those in your arsenal when dealing with bedtime, right? It’s also a good introduction to Thanksgiving book for your toddler.
7. There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey by Lucille Colandra
This book series is so ridiculous, but the illustrations are fun and Ronia loves just how crazy the story gets. Like why would the lady swallow a football for the turkey she already consumed? Who knows.
8. Turkey Goes to School by Wendi Silvano
It came to my attention that Turkey Goes to School is a part of a larger series about all the silly things the turkey gets up to. Obviously in this book he wants to go to school and learn, so he tries to find a way to sneak inside, but finds it difficult, because turkeys are not allowed in school. It’s pretty cute.
9. Fancy Nancy: Our Thanksgiving Banquet by Jane O’Conner
We love a good Fancy Nancy book in this house, especially because Ronia now adores wearing “pretty dresses.” Fancy Nancy is great for learning a larger vocabulary with a little sparkle on top.
10. Thanksgiving Parade by Melanie Matthews
Thanksgiving Parade is another simple book, but one that would be perfect for a gift. It also introduces the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, which will always be iconic.
11. A Very Thankful Prayer by Bonnie Rickner Jensen
Thanksgiving time is about remembering the things for which we are thankful. Or the people for whom we are thankful. A Very Thankful Prayer does a great job of reminding your toddler how to give thanks and what the true meaning of the season is.
12. Pookie’s Thanksgiving by Sandra Boynton
We were recently introduced to Sandra Boynton by a friend of mine.
