5 Surprising Things About Building a House
These 5 Surprising Things About Building a House might not be a surprise to some, but they were certainly a shock to me. When my husband and I discovered that building a home was an option for us, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Regardless, it was worth every twist and turn along the way.
1. There will be setbacks. Multiple setbacks.
Our home was built during an unprecedented time. The pandemic made things interesting with a lot of delays and shortages. However, from what I have heard when you are building a home you can almost guarantee setbacks. People kept saying that, but I didn’t believe it until it happened. We were meant to move in at the beginning of July, but our move-in date was pushed and pushed until we were able to get in the house at the end of September. Expect delays when you are building a home. Expect it and accept it.
2. You need to clean before you move in.
New homes come with a lot of dust. Our builders had a team come in to clean before we got the keys, but it just wasn’t… Chelsea clean. You know? If you want everything move-in ready, I recommend taking a day before you bring your belongings to vacuum and dust.
3. There might be a “punch list” of items to fix.
Before we officially moved into our new home, we went around and pointed out little things that we would like fixed or repaired or touched up. I thought after that appointment we were done with touch ups, but in the first couple weeks after moving in, we noticed a few more things that weren’t quite right. Things like cabinet pulls not matching or the bathtub needing to be sealed again. Luckily our builder was more than willing to schedule repairs.
4. There will be many, many meetings.
Choosing everything for your new home will take time and a lot of meetings. If you are looking to build a home, be ready to schedule many many meetings and phone calls. I also tend to make choices easier if I can physically see the items I am choosing. That made things tricky sometimes, but we always made it work. If you are building a custom home you will have to choose everything from grout color to light fixtures. Brace yourself for an onslaught of decisions.
5. It will feel like home.
The instant we walked into our new build home it felt like exactly that… home. All those decisions and careful plans had come together beautifully, and we could see our fingerprints everywhere (metaphorically of course). Building a house is a stressful and tedious process with lots of unpredictable moments, but all of that chaos will be worth it in the end. You get to build a home! That’s something special.
