6 Things I Should Have Packed in My Hospital Delivery Bag
You may remember last month I posted a blog about what I packed in my hospital bag as a new mom, which I prepped before the birth of our daughter. After she was born in early December I noted all the things I wish I had in my bag while in the hospital, so without further adieu, please enjoy the updated version: 6 Things I Should Have Packed in My Hospital Delivery Bag. My previous post is not irrelevant per se, but it did require some updates. I’m learning as I go, and want to be sure to share any knowledge I have gleaned thus far.
Again, I want to remind you to call the hospital or birthing center and ask what they provide during and after delivery. My list is based on what my hospital provided. Your list may vary based on where you live and choose to deliver.
Now, before I begin I want to highlight the items from my previous list I am very glad I packed. These items include:
1. Hospital Gown and Robe
The hospital gown and robe I packed seemed a little “extra” at first, but honestly I was so beyond thankful to have it. The gowns my hospital provided were not big enough, and I felt so utterly exposed all the time. After delivery I changed into the gown and robe I purchased from Baby Be Mine Maternity and felt much better.
2. Slippers
I ended up getting an epidural, though it was not planned, and for several days following delivery I had very little feeling in my right foot. Odd side effect, I know, but nevertheless I was happy to have slippers to cushion the constant tingle.
3. Pillows and Blankets
Dang hospitals are COLD. And the blankets provided did next to nothing to keep us warm. I was glad to have even my small blanket.
4. Cookies for the Nurses
They DESERVE it. Every single nurse we had worked so hard and was so helpful. They genuinely cared about me, my husband and my baby. I wish I could have done much more for them then provide homemade cookies, but we were happy to have something to give as a thank you.
Okay, now for the items I wish I had packed:
1. Smaller clothes for baby
Judging by the size of my family (we are all very tall) and the birth weights of myself and my siblings, I was fully expecting at least an eight pound baby. It was a surprise to find out our Ronia Ann was only 7lbs 6oz. The onesies and cute outfits I brought with me were much too big for our girl, so it would be been a good idea to have multiple sizes on hand in order to be prepared.
2. Food
We had a few snacks in our bag, but after 30+ hours of labor I was ravenous and the tiny portions of hospital food were not satisfying. If you have the time, I highly recommend bringing more snacks.
3. An Extra Change of Clothes
Our daughter was coughing up a lot of fluid her first 24 hours, so to be safe we stayed an extra night. You never know what will happen during delivery, so be sure to pack extra clothes in case you stay longer than expected.
4. More Blankets
Sure, I had my small throw blanket, but I wish we had remembered to grab a blanket for my husband. He would have appreciated the extra layers… and maybe shared with me! Again, hospitals are COLD.
5. A Halo Sleep Sack
The blanket they swaddle your baby in when you are at the hospital is difficult to maneuver, especially when you are a sleepy new parent. If you have a Halo Sleep Sack for baby, I highly recommend bringing it along instead.
6. Beach Towels
Out of the 6 Things I Should Have Packed in My Hospital Delivery Bag as a New Mom, this may be the most important. I am six feet tall and those tiny towels they give you at the hospital just don’t cut it. Pack you and your significant other some big beach towels if you plan to shower at the hospital. They take up space, but it’s worth it.
