1. Wake Up Early
According to a study by Christopher Randler, a biology professor at the University of Education in Germany, morning people are more persistent, cooperative, agreeable, and conscientious. Studies also show that waking up early improves your health and reduces stress. What is an early morning, you may ask? Good question.
It all depends on when you go to sleep. According to the Center of Disease Control, adults between the ages of 18-60 years need at least seven hours of rest. I personally need at least 8 hours to function properly. Keep all this in mind when planning a good nights rest and an early morning. How long will your morning routine take? Wake up with enough time to complete your routine without rushing.
If you are currently not an early riser, start small. Wake up an hour earlier than usual. Give it a couple weeks and see how your life is transformed.
2. Prayer
The best way to begin your day is in prayer. When we give God the first and best part of our day, we are filled with peace that passes human understanding. Remember, a hygge home is a peaceful home. Still wondering why you should start your day with prayer? Well, Jesus did it.
Mark 1:35 says, ” And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.” Christ knew he needed to begin his day talking to God. He and God were partners in a grand mission to save the lost. Unless you the give the Lord full charge of your work for the day, your effort will be in vain.
Putting prayer first is also time well spent. Prayer is our communication to God, so don’t gloss over it or put it off. Align yourself with God first thing in the morning and that connection will carry you through whatever comes next.
3. Workout
I heard your sigh through the internet. I know, I know. Working out first thing in the morning is one of my least favorite things, but there are plenty of reasons to begin your day this way.
Studies show that working out first thing in the morning helps with appetite control, gives you more energy, better focus, and even improves your sleep. All of that is true, but for me the best reason to start with a workout is that it checks it off my list.
Sure, I feel better and have more energy, but I also don’t need to worry about scheduling exercise later in the day. It’s done! I can shower and move on with my day. Hygge living means being prepared. When I get my workout out of the way first thing in the morning, I feel prepared for whatever the day may bring.
4. Bible Study & Journal
I mentioned previously the importance of prayer, but reading the Word is an equally important part of your hygge morning routine. Scripture says we are to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (Matthew 22:37).”
We are to love Him with all our mind. How do you get to know someone? You spend time with them, talk with them, and listen to what it is they have to say. Make your quiet time with God a priority in the morning.
Not sure where to begin in studying the Bible? Try reading a few verses and journaling your thoughts. Journaling is an excellent practice and it will help you sort through your thoughts as you start to study.
5. Drink a Cup of Tea
While you study the scriptures, be sure to grab a delicious cup of hot tea or coffee. Hot beverages are very hygge, as they invoke a sense of coziness and warmth. If you would like to read about all the different benefits of a daily cup of tea, check out this article by Reader’s Digest.
Oh, and just a PSA, this honey lavender tea I have been drinking lately is incredible. Very soothing. If you love a calming tea in the evening, I highly recommend this one.
6. Healthy Breakfast from Scratch
A healthy breakfast is an important part of any hygge morning routine. If you are someone who grabs a banana or a granola bar on the go, try slowing down enough to make your breakfast from scratch. Try something new like My Ultimate Healthy Smoothie Bowl Recipe or if you enjoy a bit of protein for breakfast, scramble some eggs on toast.
Then, get this… sit and enjoy your meal. Yup, it seems crazy not to eat your breakfast in the car on the way to work or dropping off the kids at school, but I promise you it will be worth it. Use that breakfast time to talk with your family, or spend time alone in the quiet before they all wake up. Either way, enjoying a homemade breakfast is the perfect addition to a hygge morning routine.
7. Tidy for Ten Minutes
My last of 7 Tips to Create a Hygge Morning Routine is to tidy up your house. No, it doesn’t have to take forever. Utilize the ten minutes before you walk out the door to put away your breakfast dishes, laundry on the floor and hair products on the sink. Coming home to clutter can cause stress, but a hygge home is clutter-free.
Start your day off right by tidying the house for ten minutes, and your future self will thank you.
