1. Painting Watercolor
The first hobby on my list of 7 Unique Hygge Hobby Ideas for the New Year is watercolor painting. There’s something about painting that’s soothing to the soul. Maybe it’s the colors or the swish of the brush. Regardless, watercoloring can be a fun way to make gifts for friends and family. Or to make art for your own home.
The watercolor kit pictured above is by Wildflower Art Studio out of Denton, Texas. They have many starter kits to choose from if you are interested in learning to watercolor.
2. Bullet Journaling
There’s nothing I love more than an organized planner. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but it is highly satisfying. If you are someone who likes a bit of creative structure to your day, I highly recommend bullet journaling. This form of journaling is a fun personal organization system you draw yourself. It’s an excellent hobby choice if you have big goals for the year (or if one of your goals is to be more organized). The kit pictured above is by Hannarchy Studios. Her shop has everything you need to begin your bullet journaling journey.
3. Screen Printing
Screen printing is a hobby I recently discovered. It is a technique in which mesh is used to transfer ink onto a canvas, poster, artwork, or even fabric. With this hobby you could create all manner of customized clothing for you and your friends. Screen Printing seems simple enough to learn, but if you want to get started right I found a kit made by Hunt the Moon Print on Etsy.
4. Wood Burning
Wood burning such a creative way to use natural resources to make art. Do you aspire to make homemade Christmas gifts this year? Wood burning might be the perfect hobby for you. Agent Gifts have a kit made specifically for beginners. However, you can also find everything you need to practice wood burning at your local hobby store or even in your backyard!
5. Flower Pressing
Speaking of things you find in your backyard, the next hobby on our list is flower pressing. You might think of it as an activity for children, but I promise it can be so much more than that. If you love to travel, flower pressing could be an excellent way to learn about local plant life. Or if you love to hike it can be a way to document your many expeditions. Flower pressing is a self-explanatory hobby that takes very little effort. So if you are looking for a low-maintenance hobby then this might be the one for you. Zoe Gibbons Studio makes a beautiful personalized flower pressing kit.
6. Bird Watching
Bird watching is a hobby my husband and I have recently dipped our toes into. Early this winter we bought a bird feeder that we keep on the back patio. Every morning there’s a gathering of birds in our backyard looking for some breakfast. I never thought I’d be the type of person who likes learning bird names and sounds, but this is where being quarantined with a newborn has brought me. It’s actually really fun, and this bird watching kit from Naturetry is the perfect place to start. (Or just scatter seeds on your patio and see what happens!)
7. Whittling
My husband decided that whittling would be the hobby he tries next. He finds it so soothing to sit on the back patio (likely watching the birds we now feed) and whittling away at some new creation. The thing about whittling is, you don’t need to have a plan. You can just let your thoughts wander while you work. Out of the 7 Unique Hygge Hobby Ideas for the New Year, whittling might be the most peaceful. What do you think? Oh, and if you would like to try this hobby out for size, Red Oak Adventures makes a nice kit for beginners.
