1. Something to Read
You might be thinking, “Wait, isn’t this about breakfast? Reading is not eating.” You’d be right, but the first step toward a perfect breakfast in bed is thinking outside the box. Placing a newspaper or book of poetry on the tray is a thoughtful and mindful addition. It gives the receiver of the breakfast something to read while slowly enjoying their morning meal. Or perhaps, write them a handmade card. The more personal the gesture the better.
2. Basket or Tray
Breakfast in bed requires a basket, tray, or even a cutting board. Whatever you choose keep in mind you likely will need to assemble in the kitchen and walk the meal into the next room. Trays with handles are better for this purpose. Baskets are a unique choice, because they add a little character to your already unique gesture. There is also something comforting about a picnic, and baskets reflect that vibe. Whatever type of tray you choose, just remember to walk carefully. There’s nothing worse than a spilled tray of yummy breakfast food.
3. Homemade Meal
The idea behind breakfast in bed is that you are creating something special for someone you love. For this reason, I encourage you to take the extra time to cook the meal from scratch. Don’t heat up a frozen toaster waffle or place a whole apple on the plate. Cut fruit and place it in a tiny bowl. Garnish the oatmeal. Mix up some pancake batter and scramble some eggs. Whatever foods you include, make them from scratch. No microwavable meals this time, okay?
4. Unique Selections
Speaking of food, one of the best elements of breakfast in bed are the unique selections. Think about morning meals you’ve had on vacation. You typically eat things you wouldn’t take the time to make for yourself. Let’s face it, many of us eat a granola bar on the way to work and wash it down with lukewarm coffee in a to-go mug. There’s no need to rush breakfast in bed. It’s meant to be a slow and sweet process. Choose foods you wouldn’t typically take time time to make, like an omelet or waffles, smoothie bowl or fruit salad. Plate the food and make it look pretty. The food should reflect the love and time it took to prepare. Make it special.
5. Vase of Flowers
A bouquet of fresh-cut flowers is something I do not typically indulge in purchasing, so when I receive flowers it makes them extra special. Flowers on the breakfast tray adds a note of freshness to your morning, but makes the receiver of the breakfast feel special. Is your loved one allergic to flowers? Try a small succulent or paper flowers. Think about what they love and customize the breakfast in bed to fit their personality.
6. Delicious Beverage
Speaking of customization, what is your loved ones’ favorite beverage? Do they start their day with a cup of coffee or ice water, juice or tea? Whatever their drink of choice, remember to add it to the tray. Preferably, in a glass cup or mug. It’s all about the extra steps taken. Maybe you can place a teapot of hot water on the tray with an assortment of teas from which to choose. Or perhaps you need a little cup of creamer or sugar for the coffee. Remember, detail counts.
7. Quality Dishware
Quality dishware is an important and often overlooked part of the 8 Elements for the Perfect Breakfast in Bed. The creativity of a prepared meal is lost when you place it on a paper plate or serve it with plastic silverware. Use real, quality dishes. We all have that one confusing spoon in our utensil drawer whose origin we can’t recall. Don’t use that spoon. Choose matching silverware and wrap it in a cloth napkin. Going the extra mile is the core of the perfect breakfast in bed.
8. Cloth Napkin
Now for our final element. You may have seen me mention a cloth napkin. This is, again, an underrated part of the perfect breakfast in bed. A napkin is necessary to keep the eater clean, but a cloth napkin brings your morning meal to a much cozier and classier level. Don’t have a cloth napkin? Try folding your cleanest tea towel and draping it across the tray. This designer element is the ideal final touch to the perfect breakfast in bed.
