8 Ways to Hygge in the Summer
Hygge is a Danish word that encompasses a feeling of coziness, contentment and well-being by enjoying the simple things in life. I don’t know where you live but there’s something un-cozy about the summer months in Kansas. It’s just plain hot here… all the time. However, we can still practice a hygge lifestyle even in the most uncomfortable months of the year. Discover 8 Ways to Hygge in the Summer below. Stay cool!

1. Light a Candle and Read a Good Book
A friend of mine recently told me her favorite time of day is first thing in the morning before the sun rises. She lights a nice candle and reads a book in the semi-darkness. I thought, what a hygge way to start the day. Summertime in Kansas means the sun rises rather early, but wouldn’t it be worth it to get up and have that sweet time to yourself? Reading a book by candle light is definitely something I’m adding to my summer bucket list. It also gives me an excuse to buy summer candles.
2. Fresh Flowers Inside and Out
Research shows that having fresh flowers in your home can help reduce pain levels as well as reduce anxiety and blood pressure. So why not cut yourself a fresh bouquet of wildflowers for the kitchen table? You could also purchase flowers from your local vendor or farmer’s market. If you have space outside for a hanging plant or bed of flowers, then take some time this summer to plant and tend to your very own garden. Basically, you just can’t go wrong with flowers to hygge in the summer.
3. Take a Hike
If you have been following my blog for awhile you know that I love a good hike. There is just nothing more hygge than a nice long walk in the woods or along the shore of a lake. Hiking is good for your mental and physical health and can help you think more clearly. For more reasons why you should definitely take a hike this summer. check out the 5 Benefits of a Hygge Hike.
4. Make Homemade Ice Cream
One of my favorite childhood memories is making homemade ice cream with my family. We used to put all the ingredients in a coffee can and place that can inside a larger coffee can filled with ice and salt. Then we’d roll the can back and forth with our feet, passing it around the campground until the ice cream was ready. It might sound strange, but trust me when I say it’s super fun and delicious. I highly recommend finding an ice cream recipe that works for you and make some at home this summer.
5. Grill in Backyard
Is summer ever really summer if you don’t grill in your backyard? There’s something about BBQ and corn on the cob that just screams summer to me. Add a little hygge to the season by inviting over some friends or family, grilling out and then eating the delicious food on your patio. You could even bake a pie or use some of that homemade ice cream you made for an extra summer treat!
6. Do a Deep Clean
I know what you are thinking. Cleaning is not that fun. First of all, I would disagree with you, because I love to clean and organize. Secondly, doing a deep clean of your home is actually very hygge. A hygge home is clutter-free and cozy. Summer is the perfect time to tackle a deep-cleaning project in your home. Beat the heat and enjoy the AC while cleaning your closets. Then by the time winter rolls around and you are stuck indoors, your home will feel more welcoming and peaceful.
7. Host a Game Night With Friends
Hosting a game night with friends is such a good way to get to know one another. Living hygge is all about enjoying the simple things in life. There’s nothing more simple than an old fashioned board game, a few snacks and a small group of friends. Choose games in which everyone can participate, and that everyone will enjoy. Remember, it’s not about being competitive, but gathering together in fellowship. Provide some snacks or ask guests to bring snacks to share and have some good old fashioned fun!
8. Shop at the Farmer’s Market
Supporting local businesses is important, and what better opportunity to support them than shopping at your local farmer’s market? Not only is it an excellent opportunity to get outdoors, but the farmer’s market has everything! Fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, meats, baked goods, gifts for loved ones and dozens of plant varieties. No matter what you are looking for, they likely have it! So try something new and shop local this summer. (Be sure to wear your mask if your local farmer’s market is requiring it and be safe during this season.)
