Creating a Big Girl Room for Our Toddler

Over a year ago I had a design idea for my toddler’s big girl room. I wanted it to be timeless, sweet and yet a little mature. Most of all, I wanted it to reflect her personality. I think we got it right! Read all about Creating a Big Girl Room for Our Toddler below!

Design Board

Before I even started this project in real life, I made a design board. I tinkered with it here and there for over a year, possibly closer to two years. That’s my biggest tip when working on any home project. Create a design board, take your time, change things around, tinker with it until you absolutely love it.

Wallpaper

The first thing I found for my daughter’s room was the wallpaper. I fell in love with a particular design and no matter how much I looked I kept coming back to it. Ronia loved it too, so I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy it. I had never installed wallpaper before, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It took a total of maybe 9 hours and frustrated me towards the end of the project, but overall I would definitely wallpaper again. It completely transformed the room!

(Let me know if you want to hear more about how I installed the wallpaper and I can do a separate post.)

Bead Board

One thing I knew I wanted to do was make Ronia’s big girl room feel like a little cottage. The perfect way to do that was with bead board. Our friend Paul helped install the bead board and trim, because I don’t have the right tools. However, I do believe this is something that you could do yourself.

Paint

After the bead board was installed I painted it the same color as our interior walls, Panda White by Sherwin Williams. The paint took a couple of coats and we were able to get it done in a single evening, maybe 6 hours. The trickiest part was getting in the little crevices of the board.

Rug

The rug I chose is the Nora Mossy Green Distressed Persian Style Area Rug from World Market. It’s soft and works beautiful in the room, but it definitely looks more grey than mossy green to me. Also, I needed to lay it outside for a day to get rid of that new carpet smell.

Bookshelf

Most of you know how much we love books in this family. There’s no way Ronia was going to have a big girl room without a bookshelf. My dream bookcase is from Anthropologie, but it’s very expensive and I just could never justify it for any home in my room. After debating on several from Wayfair, Target and Ikea, I decided on this Hampshire Tall Olive bookcase from Crate and Barrel. It’s absolutely stunning in person. The shelves are moveable and the little drawer is perfect for toys, but we use it as her little pajama drawer.

Dresser

Speaking of drawers, we needed to find a small replacement for her big dresser/changing table. I found a small ikea RAST dresser on Facebook Marketplace. It was brand new in box and $15 less than at Ikea, so we were pretty excited. It gave the perfect amount of storage for her closet. I didn’t paint it or anything, because it’s just in the closet.

Bedframe

The biggest investment for her room was the Jenny Lind bed frame from Crate and Barrel. I consider it an investment, because it is such a timeless design I hope Ronia will be using it for years and years to come. The quality is incredible and I’m so glad we decided to go with that design.

Mattress

Another sort of investment was her mattress. Again, I knew she would be using it for many years to come, so I wanted to get a decent mattress that would last. We love our king Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress, so I decided to get her a Tuft & Needle Kin Mattress. It was on sale at the time, but looks to be full price again on Amazon.

Y’all, Ronia sleeps SO well in her big girl bed. I really think it’s this mattress. She’s gets so cozy she doesn’t want to get out of bed. I understand that feeling.

Bedding

Ronia’s bedding came from a few places. I wanted to make sure she had some layers, because winter is coming, but also because well… it looked cute. I will list what I can below:

Pink Duvet – Ikea
Sheets – Pottery Barn
Quilt – McGee & Co
Pillows – Target
Throw Pillows – had already

Lamp

My daughter has an eye for design even at almost three years old. Seriously. She often checks our outfits or helps pick something for our home and does an excellent job. That being said, she also loves the color pink. I thought for sure when I had her pick a lamp she would pick a pink one, but no. She wanted the “fancy” one. It was the perfect addition.

Light Fixture

The brass light fixture is from World Market. The old light fixture looked fine, but I feel like this one elevated the room and tied in well with the wallpaper. We installed the fixture ourselves and it was actual much more simple than I thought it would be.

Bedside Table

The one thing I don’t love about her room is the bedside table. The matching one from Crate and Barrel was a little pricey. I was hoping to find a vintage one somewhere, but so far no luck. For now we have one from Ikea that works fine.

Various Decor

There were a few decor items I added to her room that I will try and list below. Basically, I wanted to add some princess/feminine touches, because my daughter is very girly. Most of them were from around the house or her previous room. I will link the ones I can below:

Castle Night Light
Winnie the Pooh Embroidery
Frames – Marshalls or Home Goods
