When You are Deeply Tired on the Inside
Sunday I had my first experience with what I can only assume was a pregnancy hormones. For the first time in my 14 weeks of pregnancy, I started to cry for absolutely no reason. No reason at all. And not like a small, sweet, silent cry to myself. Nope. It was this uncontrollable sobbing for which I had no explanation. My husband was sweet and understanding, in spite of the situation, but the entire event was honestly embarrassing.
Have you ever been deeply tired on the inside?
The night before hadn’t been my best night of sleep, so I assumed the spontaneous explosion of emotion was the fatigue finally setting in. I was tired, and I needed to rest. Well, it took about an hour but I finally calmed down, went to bed early and slept late.
The following morning I woke up feeling mostly rested, but still tired. If you have ever been deeply tired on the inside then you understand the feeling. I decided to go on a long walk to clear my head. I chose a random sermon to listen to while I walked by Steven Furtick that was appropriately titled, “Tired on the Inside.” In the sermon Steven walks through one of my favorite stories in the Bible, The Woman at the Well.
If you haven’t taken the time to read this incredible story, I encourage you to turn in your Bible to John 4 and read through the passage. It’s a story I’ve studied so intently I though I knew all the passage had to give me. That was until Pastor Furtick pointed out a verse I had somehow overlooked.
“Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.” -John 4:4-6
Y’all, I am so tired. Not just physically (although this pregnancy has certainly given me new respect for a good night of sleep). No, I’m tired emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. I’m just so deeply tired on the inside. With everything going on across world these last few months my empathetic heart is worn out. It’s for this reason that I found it so comforting that Jesus got tired, too.
Jesus was tired.
Can you imagine how tired Jesus must have been? Tired physically, sure. Walking hours a day to get to where you need to go would be exhausting. But Jesus must have been so tired on the inside. He was tired of seeing his people treating each other cruelly, tired of dealing with the Pharisee’s, tired of people not believing He was the Savior, tired knowing He would be going to the cross, tired of the broken world that was once perfection.
I know you are tired, too. Like me, you are overwhelmed and broken by everything we as a planet have been through so far in 2020. It’s been a difficult year to say the least. No matter what, it’s important to remember our Lord and Savior understands what we are feeling.
The Son of God got tired, too.
Pastor Steven Furtick said, “Faith doesn’t prevent fatigue, it just gives me a place to sit.” When Jesus got tired, He took a seat by Jacob’s well. He may have taken a seat because he himself needed to rest. However, I believe He took a seat at the well not only because He himself was tired. He took a seat because the Samaritan Woman was tired.
She needed rest only Jesus could give her, holy rest.
Right now I think we all needed a little bit of holy rest. No amount of sleep, social media, Netflix, video games, or relationships can give you holy rest. Only Jesus can provide us with that type of peace.
When you are deeply tired on the inside, take a seat at the well. Sit with your Father. Allow Him to comfort you. Resting with God does not make you lazy. It gives you strength. Jesus got tired, too. He knows exactly how you are feeling. Rest with Him.
I hope you enjoyed When You are Deeply Tired on the Inside. The truth is I couldn’t shake this sermon from my mind. So much so that I had to share part of it with you. If you are looking for more daily devotions or Bible studies? Check out these materials:
