Establishing a Simple Morning Bible Study Routine
Full disclosure, I am writing this blog post in preparation for Baby Gentry. After her arrival, my Bible Study Morning Routine will likely look different, and I will be sure to update you if that is the case. Based on my current schedule, below are my tips on Establishing a Simple Morning Bible Study Routine. If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to read the Bible more, then these tips for a simple routine are perfect for you.
1. Study in the Morning
Even if you are not a morning person, I highly encourage you to establish a morning Bible study routine. Prioritize your quiet time with the Lord first thing in the morning, and you will be amazed at the difference it makes in your day. Sure, it might take several days if not weeks in a row to feel awake an earlier hour, but I promise it will be worth it. The sleep you choose to sacrifice in order to read scripture will not be lost.
I wake up at 5:20am most mornings and go for a short walk with my husband. Then we get ready for the day and both sit down by 7:00am for a half an hour. Sometimes I am able to study more, others a little less, but I always aim for at least 30 minutes.
“Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.” – Psalm 143:8
2. Schedule Your Study Time
Like I mentioned above, I aim for 30 minutes of quiet time every morning. I try and sit down in the same spot sometime between 6:30am-7:00am. If I have an early morning appointment and need to drive, I will have my quiet time in the car. Whatever it takes, prioritize that time and set it aside. Communicate to others that that portion of your day is to be respected. If you have children, I understand this might be difficult, but keeping a consistent Bible Study time is also a good example for your kids.
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9
3. Be Ready and Avoid Distraction
As I mentioned before, I am at this moment very pregnant. That means I am very thirsty and uncomfortable. In order to be ready for Bible Study time and avoid distraction, I make sure to have a full glass of water nearby and a cozy blanket. Right now the nursery is actually the ideal quiet spot in my home, so I go into the nursery and curl into the rocking chair. Think about what might distract you during your Bible Study time and prepare in advance. You’ll thank yourself later!
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2
4. Think of This Time as an Investment
Not every passage in the Bible is easily accessible. There might be mornings when you are completely unsure what you just read. That’s okay! It’s a Bible Study, so you should be learning. Think of your morning Bible Study time as an investment not only in the rest of your day, but for many years to come. Jen Wilkin always refers to Bible study as a savings account, not a credit card. Each passage you read is a nugget of scripture to store away for when you need it.
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” – Psalm 37:5
5. Ask the Lord for Help
Does the idea of establishing a simple morning Bible study routine seem almost overwhelming? Don’t know where to begin? Ask the Lord for help. He is ready and excited to develop a relationship with you. He wants you to learn from His Word, so why not ask Him for help on how to do so? Send up a prayer before you being to read and ask him to fill the room with His presence. You are not alone.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10
6. Be Open to Changes
Sometimes our quiet time can become stagnant and unfulfilling. It happens to everyone. So be open to making some changes in your routine. For example, if you typically sit and read for 30 minutes in silence, try listening to worship music. Or you could try listening to a sermon or podcast. No one’s Bible Study time looks the same. Why should it? We all learn differently. Be open to making some changes to your routine every now and then to keep it fresh.
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…” – Ecclesiastes 3:1
7. When in Doubt, Sit in Silence
We all have those seasons of complete exhaustion. If you can’t bring yourself to open your Bible, journal or study, then just sit in prayer before the Lord. Can’t find the words to pray? Then just sit in silence in His presence. Again, there is no “right way” to have a morning Bible Study Routine. Just sit. Romans 8:26 says, “the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (ESV).” God knows your heart, and sometimes there are no need for words.
