Hospitality Scriptures for the Holiday Season
In my previous blog posts about how to make hosting during the holidays a little easier, I mentioned the importance of prayer and preparing your heart and mind. My list of Hospitality Scriptures for the Holiday Season is meant to be in addition to that list and will hopefully help you navigate the most wonderful, but also most stressful time of year.
1. “…and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.” – 1 Timothy 5:10
What are you known for? When people walk into your home, do they feel welcome, or perhaps like they are a burden? Keep in mind that we are meant to be Christ-like in our example. How would Christ treat the guests in your home?
2. “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.” – 1 Peter 4:8-9
We are called to love others as Christ loves us, so remember that when you are hosting this holiday season. It can be easy to forget when people get grumbly and aren’t helping and make a mess without a care, but you don’t have to act that way, too.
3. “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.” – Luke 14:7-11
Maybe you aren’t hosting this holiday season, but are going to someone else’s home. I hate to sound like your grandma, but remember your manners. When you are invited into someone’s safe place, then you need to treat it as such. Don’t be snooping. Offer to help with dishes or making food. Listen more than you talk. Just be kind.
4. “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality…. Live in harmony with one another.” – Romans 12:13-16
Now this verse goes along with what I said previously, and might be my favorite hospitality scripture. We are called to be peacemakers, so your home should be a place of peace. Thanksgiving and Christmas bring a lot of people together who may not think alike, but that doesn’t mean we can’t live in harmony. Politics isn’t the reason for the season, y’all.
5. “But hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.” – Titus 1:8
I love how straight forward Paul is in this Titus 1:8 hospitality scripture. Remembering to pray and read through these scriptures before hosting during the holidays can help you stay self-controlled when things go awry. You can’t control the actions of others, but you can control yourself.
