How to Completely Transform Your Pantry
A walk-in pantry has always been a dream of mine, so when we moved into our new home I knew I wanted to get it just right. These five tips below on How to Completely Transform Your Pantry helped me how where to begin. If you are looking to organize any area of your home, I know these tips can help you, too.
1. Declutter the Pantry First
The very first step to Completely Transform Your Pantry is to declutter. Clean out any trash or expired items. Literally remove every bag and box from your pantry shelves and wipe them down. Starting with a clean slate will help you know where to begin.
2. Dream About the Look You Want
When I decided to transform our pantry I spent a lot of time on Instagram and Pinterest. I kept my eye out for discounted organizational items. I even stood in the doorway of our pantry and simply envisioned what I wanted it to look like. Do you want a certain aesthetic or do you simply want to keep things tidy? Allow yourself to dream about it rather than rush into the process and buy a bunch of things you don’t need or won’t use.
3. Be Honest About What You Need
Be brutally honest with yourself about what you need to have on hand and what you actually will eat. Do not keep a bunch of items in your pantry that you know you are never going to eat, things that have expired or even items you will never use.
For example, we do not drink coffee. We do, however, have a coffee pot for family when they visit. I don’t need to keep it easily accessible, so I moved it up night and out of the way.
4. Take Your Time
We moved into our home 5 months ago and I am just now feeling like the pantry is complete. Change takes time. Life happens and you get interrupted. Sure, it would be nice to get everything done in a few hours, but to transform your pantry you need to have patience. Don’t rush the process. It’s okay if you take tit one step at a time.
Start with decluttering and taking stock of what you have. Wipe down shelves and make a list of what organizational items you might need to buy. Organize one shelf and then another until wa-la! The job is done.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Make Adjustments
Our pantry has gone through a few iterations since moving into our new home. By that I mean at first it was a mess of boxes and then I tried several different organizational tools and ideas until I found what works best for us. If you organize your pantry and find it isn’t what you hoped it would be, then make changes. A pantry should be functional and may change with time and as your family grows.
For example, right now I have to be mindful of what is on the bottom shelf, because my toddler can reach those items and will make a mess. When she is a couple years older, however, I might move her snacks lower so she can access them easier.
