How to Create a Fairy Garden in Your Backyard

My daughter is obsessed with unicorns and fairies. She loves all things whimsical and magical, and it’s the sweetest thing to witness. I wanted to bring just a little slice of that magic to our own home, so early this fall I gathered supplies and made her dream some true. Read below to learn more about How to Create a Fairy Garden in Your Backyard.

1. Raised Garden Bed

I’ve seen many people put their fairy gardens in the actual garden, under a tree or in some corner of the yard. The trouble with that is we live near the woods in Kansas. I was worried about animals or weather damaging the garden, so we chose a raised bed to put on our porch. We found our kids raised garden bed on sale at Walmart, but it looks like they are currently out of stock. I’ve linked the same bed from Bay here.

2. Mix of Real and Faux Plants

I chose real and fake plants for our little garden box. These plants will obviously die off in the winter, but I’m excited to replace them with more cold-friendly plants or faux christmas trees. Because there are real plants in the box currently I filled the bottom of the box with flower bed soil. For most of the planter box I used faux plants from a fairy garden set linked here.

3. Fairy Garden Accessories

As for the rest of the garden I used rocks and sticks from our backyard, glass rock from Hobby Lobby and fairy items I found at both Dollar Tree and Hobby Lobby. I’ve also seen accessories at gardening stores. Ronia and I once made a fairy garden in our window well, but it was ruined by a bad storm and animals. Some of these accessories are from that project. Any items I could find online are linked below:

Glass Beads
Bridge
Mushroom Houses

4. Add Some Extra Magic

My daughter “wrote” a note to the fairies after they built a garden in her backyard. They responded with a little note back. It was a tiny heart. She was just glowing with excitement that fairies had written her a note.
