How to Create a Fairy Garden in Your Window Well
When creating a relaxing space for our guest room, I was at a loss for what to do with our most unattractive egress window well. That was until I came across a photo of a fairy garden. Ronia and I worked together, and I can’t wait to see how our little window transforms over time. Read below to discover How to Create a Fairy Garden in Your Window Well.
(Truth be told, you can create a fairy garden almost anywhere, so if you don’t have a window well to utilize, don’t let that stop you.)

1. Get a Window Well Safety Cover
The first step in creating a Fairy Garden in Your Window Well is to get a window well safety cover. Our home came with the heavy metal bar cover, but that doesn’t keep out the rain or frogs… or baby bunnies. We decided to get the plastic covers that secure over the metal covers. That way when it rains the fairy garden won’t get went and mildew over time.
2. Clean Out Weeds and Insects
After you’ve covered your window well safely (because above all, your basement egress windows are meant to give you an escape in the event of a fire or other emergency), you can clean it out. Just be prepared and careful when cleaning the window well. To be honest, cleaning our egress windows was a bit traumatic, because I kept finding spiders. So many spiders. And when I was filming a reel to go with this blog post, I found a small snake.
You could even spray insect and snake spray (once the window well is clean) to prevent future infestations.
3. Add a Layer of Moss
Next in our steps to create a fairy garden in your window well is to add a layer of moss. I found these sheets of faux moss on sale at my local Joann Fabric store. However, I have seen the same sheets on sale at Hobby Lobby and on Amazon. My window well is rather large, so I needed several sheets and ended up cutting a few of them to fit properly.
4. Cover the Edges
Now I didn’t love how the edges around the sheets of moss looked, so I chose this multi-pack of fairy garden foliage to help me clean up the edges and make it appear more like a meadow than the bottom of a window well. You could also add blue rocks to create a river, real rocks from your backyard or collect all manner of things from the outdoors to include in your fairy garden. It’s an excellent opportunity to get creative.
5. Give it a Personal Touch
Ronia helped me pick out our little house and dog. My hope is that over the years we pick little items together that we add to our secret garden. When choosing items for the fairy garden in your window well, I encourage you to make it your own. Be patient and keep your eyes open for the perfect items to make the space your own.
