How to Create a Hygge Outdoor Space
We have lived at our current rental for four years and finally decided to transform our patio… three months before we move again. Oh well! For the few months that remain in our current home we will enjoy the beauty of our back yard. Below are my tips on How to Create a Hygge Outdoor Space. It doesn’t take too much to make your own oasis, just a little elbow grease and imagination.
1. Choose Your Ideal Seating
When we decided to transform our patio, my husband asked for one thing. He wanted a rocking chair. To him, there is nothing more relaxing than rocking on the patio. When choosing furniture for your outdoor space, remember to take into account what you like. Do you want to rock or snuggle in? Sit alone or with your family and friends? Take your time choosing your ideal furniture and don’t be scared to make an investment. You want chairs that aren’t going to fall apart and that you can enjoy for years to come!
The furniture we chose: Delray 4 Piece Sofa Seating Group with Cushions, Winston Porter 2pcs Patio Wooden Rocking Chair
2. Pick Your Plant Babies
Every outdoor space needs a few plant babies. Not only do they look nice, but owning plants has been shown to improve your mood, as well as boost energy, creativity and productivity. They help clean the air and are therapeutic. I am slowly turning into a plant hoarder. Unintentionally, but steadily.
3. Give Yourself Some Shade
No one likes to bake in the sun while sitting on the patio. At least not for extended periods of time. If you don’t have a covered patio or porch then I recommend investing in an umbrella or another alternative for shade. Placing your furniture strategically near a tree would be a good idea. Whatever you need to do to give yourself a little bit of shade.
4. Add Some Mood Lighting
If you plan on spending late evenings in your hygge outdoor space, I recommend adding some outdoor lighting to set a more calming mood. We had some pretty lights hung on our patio, but the birds were always picking at them, so we had to take them down. I plan on adding some new lights to our porch at the next house.
5. Don’t Forget the Details
Adding your own flare to your outdoor space will really make it your own. For example, I found our “Slow Down and Soak it Up” sign on sale at Joann Fabric. It embodies exactly what we wanted our outdoor space to be – a place to slow down and savor life. We also have a metal sun hanging that we bought on our honeymoon and a wind chime from my sister. It’s details like these that will bring life to your hygge outdoor space.
Other Items from Our Patio: Marlatt Flatweave Gray Rug, Brisa Double Classic Hammock,
6. Invite Friends
No hygge outdoor space is complete without some company. Once you are done renovating, be sure to invite over some friends and family to enjoy your hard work! Have a barbecue or perhaps some iced tea. You could play a card game, some music, or even just sit and chat. Hygge living is all about the slow and simple things. Enjoying some quality time is perfectly hygge.
