How to Hygge in the Spring
Living a simple and cozy life doesn’t have to end when the snow thaws. Hygge is not seasonal, but a year-round lifestyle. Besides, there is something especially hygge about springtime. Maybe it’s the way the warm weather melts the ice in my bones or the way everything becomes new and green again. Perhaps it’s the fresh flowers or the long walks in the sun. Whatever the reason, I can’t help but feeling contented this time of year. Read below to discover How to Hygge in the Spring.
1. Do Your Spring Cleaning
The first way to Hygge in the Spring is to do your annual spring cleaning. After a long winter being cooped up inside, it’s important to cleanse out all those seasonal germs. Try using a fresh new scent in your cleaner like lemon or lavender to wash away the colder months and usher in sunshine and warmth.
2. Buy Fresh Flowers
There’s nothing like fresh flowers to brighten up a room. Fresh flowers not only bring a little bit of the outside in, but have been shown to improve mental health. Go down to your local farmer’s market or grocery store and pick out a bouquet. Just for you. Better yet, plant some wildflowers in your own backyard to support local honeybees.
3. Change Your Bed Spread
Another way to hygge in the Spring is to change your bedspread. Every fall we pile on our flannel sheets and extra blankets. When it’s finally Spring, we exchange that thicker comforter for a light one. Don’t have seasonal sheets or bedding? Then treat yourself to a new and lighter bedspread, one that’s perfect for the warmer months. It’s the little things that make a big difference.
4. Go to Brunch
When learning How to Hygge in the Spring, it’s important to understand the importance of brunch. I’m not entirely sure why, but there’s just something about a brunch in the spring. Sitting on your patio with friends or at a sweet local cafe, enjoying fresh squeeze juice and a pastry… sigh. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to add brunch to your bucket list this Spring. You can’t go wrong with brunch.
5. Open the Windows
On the first warm day, turn off your AC and open up those windows. Like I mentioned before, Winter makes for a stuffy home filled with germs. Flush all that stagnant air outside and let the light breezes of Spring cleanse your home. It’s incredible what a burst of fresh air can do for your mind, body and soul.
6. Do a Seasonal Bake
Springtime means seasonal fruits ripe for the picking! Choose a nice light fruit like oranges, lemons or strawberries and try a seasonal bake. Something like a tart or angel food cake would really hit the spot this Spring, don’t you think?
7. Go on a Picnic
Speaking of food, going on a picnic is an excellent way to hygge in the Spring. It combines all the best things: food and friends in the great outdoors. Not sure where to begin? Be sure to check out my 5 Tips to Creating the Perfect Picnic.
8. Plant a Garden
Another way to spend time outdoors is to plant your very own garden. Here in Kansas the beginning of Spring means starting to grow indoor seedlings – something my husband and I are keen t try this year. There’s just something very peaceful about putting your hands in the dirt and watching plants grow. Well, to be honest I haven’t had much luck growing things the past few years, but Springtime is full of new beginnings and I’m ready to try my green thumb again!
9. Read a Book Outside
There is just nothing better than a good book and a warm breeze under a blue sky. Nothing like it. Seize the beauty of Spring this year and hygge outside with your favorite read. Not an avid reader? You could try laying in the grass and listening to your favorite podcast or audio book. Whatever works for you!
10. Celebrate May Day
The final way I suggest you hygge this Spring is by celebrating May Day. May Day is, in my opinion, such an underrated holiday. It is, by definition, a celebration of Spring. That might seem silly, but after such a difficult year and long Winter mostly trapped indoors… I need a reason to celebrate the beauty of the world. And I think you do too.
The best way to celebrate May Day is by surprising your friends and family with flowers (real or paper) on their front steps on the first of May. So simple. So thoughtful and fun. Be sure to add May Day to your Spring bucket list this year!
