Hygge Hobbies That Will Help Relieve Anxiety for New Moms
One of the biggest challenges of my postpartum experience has been anxiety. I thought I was anxious before I had my daughter, but that anxiety was nothing compared to what has plagued me the last several months. What helped me process through postpartum stress are different “hobbies.” I say it with quotations, because some of the hobbies I list might surprise you. Read below to discover Hygge Hobbies That Will Help Relieve Anxiety.
1. Hiking
There’s just something about getting outside and letting those rays of sunshine soak into your skin. Prior to having my daughter I loved going on a long walk or hike. It soothed my soul in a way no nap ever could. The challenge when she was born was that it was winter and she was so tiny. We couldn’t go outside. Then when the weather warmed up I discovered she hated her stroller. Luckily, she loves our baby carrier. Hiking with her in tow not only makes her happy, but it does my worn-out soul good.
2. Baking
There is a rhythm to baking. It’s comforting to know that if I combine ingredients together in a certain order I will get chocolate chip cookies. And then I can eat those cookies. I can share them with family and make others happy, too. There’s a reason stress-baking is a thing. You might start baking, because you are stressed, but you never finish baking feeling that way. Next time you are feeling anxious, I encourage you to try a new recipe and just focus on each step of the recipe. Breathe in the delicious smells and release that stress.
3. Folding Laundry
Yup, I said it. Sure, folding laundry is not a hobby. I really use that term loosely here, but there is never a shortage of laundry when you are a new mom. I must do at least a load a day. Instead of letting the task of folding all those little baby clothes be a burden, make it a relaxing task. It feels so good to get all those clean clothes put away. That alone is satisfying, but try combining the chore with worship music to clear your head. Or pray as you fold. Prayer alone will relieve anxiety.
4. Journaling
Keeping a journal of all my thoughts, prayers and feelings has been instrumental as a new mom. I find peace in writing everything down if only to get it out of my head. I can go back weeks later and see the progress I have made and the prayers that have been answered. It has also been helpful for me to recap every month in a journal for my daughter. My mind is so mushy postpartum. I don’t want to forget anything, and journaling helps. For more ideas, be sure to read 8 Reasons You Should Keep a Journal.
5. Painting
Easter weekend my grandpa showed me how to paint with stencils. It was the most peace-filled I had felt in weeks. Just painting with my husband, sister and grandpa. I could have sat there all day. Then he sent me my very own set of stencils and paint markers in the mail. Now, late in the evening when the baby is asleep my husband and I like to spend a little time painting. The best part is you don’t even have to be good at it! It’s just relaxing and fun regardless.
