Hygge Home Tips: How You Can Be the Very Best Hygge Host
Having friends and family over to your home doesn’t have to be stressful or complicated. You can make your home a haven for all who enter with just a few simple tips. Please enjoy the latest in our series, Hygge Home Tips: How You Can Be the Very Best Hygge Host.
1. Make Your Home Cozy
Guests will be more at ease when they are allowed to sit on the furniture. Homes that feel like a museum are far less welcoming then one that is clean but well lived-in. Have a few throw pillows and blankets for your chillier guests, light a soothing candle or play some background music. A hygge host helps their guest to feel at home.
2. Make Toiletries Accessible
There’s nothing worse than not being able to find hand soap or a towel in the spare bathroom. Or if you run out of toilet paper… Don’t put your guests in such an awkward position. Make the toiletries easily accessible for everyone. Or if you have an overnight guest it might be a good idea to place a fresh towel and some hotel-style amenities in a basket on the bed.
3. Think About What Your Guest Loves
Are you having vegetarians to dinner? Then it might not be a good idea to serve fried chicken or pork chops. Think about what your guests prefer and be accommodating. For example, my husband and I do not drink coffee, but many of our friends and family do. We keep a small coffee maker and grounds in the cupboard just in case you have a caffeine addict drop by.
4. Keep Baked Goods in the Freezer
One of my favorite types for How You Can Be the Very Best Hygge Host is keeping cookies in the freezer. Make dough balls ahead of time and you can quickly and easily surprise guests with fresh baked cookies. I mean, a fresh baked cookie… how hygge is that?
5. Be a Good Listener
It’s all about the guest. Don’t monopolize the conversation at dinner or over coffee. Give your guest time to tell their longest story or respond in detail to your questions. If you want your guests to feel truly at home then it is important they feel you are listening, and I mean actually listening and caring about what they say. Even if you have to stay up a little late to hear them out, I promise that being a thoughtful host is worth it.
6. Have a Place for Guests to Park
It is so awkward when you get to a house and have no idea where to park. Remember to move your vehicle into the garage or out to the street if you need to, whatever works. Do you have a weird street or live in an apartment? Be sure to tell your guests ahead of time where to find the best parking. Sacrificing your own space for their comfort is a hygge host thing to do, and you can always move your car back when they leave.
Pro tip: Be especially kind to mothers with infants and older relatives. They shouldn’t have to walk a mile to your front door.
7. Keep Your Yard in Check
There is nothing more unsettling than approaching a front door covered in cobwebs. If you know you are having guests this week take a little time to give your front porch and yard a little TLC. It shouldn’t feel like Halloween to your guests when they arrive… unless it is Halloween I suppose. The outside of your home is the first thing your guests will see. Make it inviting, not creepy!
