Day 1:
What better women to begin our inspiring women devotion series than the lovely Louisa May Alcott?
Louisa was a suffragette and a Civil War nurse, but she is best known for penning the iconic novel, Little Women. For the life of me I have no idea why in my four years of English courses at K-State let alone my entire childhood no one suggested this book to me. I just finished reading it over Christmas, and I am obsessed.
My favorite quote in Little Women is actually spoken by my least favorite character, Amy. “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.”
I found myself hovering over this line and thinking about Jesus calming the storm in the book of Mark. I’d never thought of that moment on the Sea of Galilee with the disciples as a moment for them to learn how to sail. Jesus was preparing them for a time when He would no longer be physically present.
After calming the storm Jesus says in Mark 4:40, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” In other words, have you learned nothing of me?
The truth is storms are inevitable, and for the disciples much bigger storms were headed their way. But we need not fear bad weather, for it is in those moments of greatest struggle that Jesus is teaching us how to sail.
Think about it. If we know how to sail in the middle of a hurricane, then we will know how to sail when there’s nothing but clear skies on the horizon. We don’t need to fear the challenge.
Application Questions:
How can you view your latest storm as an opportunity for growth?
Who do you know who is currently learning how to sail? How can you encourage them today?
What other lessons can we learn from this passage in Mark 4?
