7 Ways to be a Proverbs 31 Woman in 2020
Do you want to learn what it means to be a Proverbs 31 Woman? God has called us not to conform, but to stand apart. However, it’s important we stand apart in a way that will honor and glorify our Father. Proverbs 31 has a lot to teach us about what it means to be a woman of the word and how we can stand apart in the light. Please enjoy these 7 Ways to be a Proverbs 31 Woman in 2020.
1. A Proverbs 31 Woman is… Trustworthy.
When you trust someone you are free to be your most authentic self. Gaining trust takes time. Becoming a Proverbs 31 Woman means showing up time and time again. It means actually praying for someone when you say you will pray or attending Bible Study when you said you would be present. A trustworthy woman is true to her word. People don’t have to second guess or wonder about her, because they know her character to be reliable.
Integrity is also a part of being trustworthy. Who are you behind closed doors? Proverbs 11:13 says “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” A gossip is rarely trustworthy. I once walked into a room and caught someone I love talking about me. It hurt the very center of me. Why? Because up until that moment I trusted them. My heart was open and vulnerable. Developing new trust with that individual took years and lots of work. Before you give in to gossip, remember the possible outcomes and the heart of the person on the other side. A Proverbs 31 Woman seeks to build stronger trust with others.
“The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.“
-Proverbs 31:11
2. A Proverbs 31 Woman is… Hardworking.
On way to stand out in any work place is to be a hard worker. Everyone wants to do the minimum to get paid and go home, but a Proverbs 31 Woman gives everything she has each day in the name of the Lord. The first job we were given in Genesis 2 was to tend to the earth, to work and manage it and all its inhabitants. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” Working hard is Biblical.
That being said, I have yet to meet a woman who does not understand the art of labor. We multitask naturally. So naturally, in fact, that we find it hard to slow down and rest. A Proverbs 31 woman is not idle, but I encourage you to find the balance between work and rest.
“She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.“
– Proverbs 31:27
3. A Proverbs 31 Woman is… Selfless.
Jesus came to seek and save the lost and to give his life as ransom for many. He showed us what it means to live a selfless life when he sacrificed his life on the cross. Just as Christ sacrificed himself, we are to live as living sacrifices each day.
Romans 12:1-2 says “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
It can be a thankless job being a woman. You make lunch for your spouse and they don’t eat it. You run all the errands and do the laundry, but no one cares. I know you feel the pain of being consistently selfless. Especially you mama’s out there. It’s not easy, but sacrifice is never easy. Know that every selfish decision you make brings honor and glory to God. Choosing to live a selfless life is an act of worship.
“She rises while it is still yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens.“
– Proverbs 31:15
4. A Proverbs 31 Woman is… Wise.
Oh how I wish we had more wise people in the world today. The rise of social media has made it simple for people to speak their minds in a very public and immediate manner. Wisdom means means processing your thoughts, purchases, and decisions before taking action. It means logging out of Twitter or turning off your phone until you’ve had time and space to process and pray with the Lord.
A Proverbs 31 woman is a wise woman. She is quick to listen to others and slow to speak. I have trouble with this one, because I come from a family of interrupters. If you are striving to become more like the woman in Proverbs 31, I encourage you to practice processing before pursuing action.
“She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.“
– Proverbs 31:16
5. A Proverbs 31 Woman is… Strong.
Women are strong, fierce and unstoppable. Throughout scripture we see dozens of examples of this profound inner strength in women. For example, look at the story of Jael in Judges 4. Jael finds herself in a tent alone with a man who is known to be abusive, but she knew how to take care of herself. I won’t spoil the ending of the story, because it’s unexpected and powerful, but be sure to look it up when you have a moment.
The point is women are strong. A Proverbs 31 woman is strong, because she knows the source of her strength is in the living water. 2 Timothy 1:7 says “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” Our strength is found in the Lord, the Creator of all things. We have the King of Kings on our side, fighting for us every day. Doesn’t that make you feel so powerful? #ladyboss
“She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet.“
– Proverbs 31:21
6. A Proverbs 31 Woman is… Compassionate.
The world could use more compassion. As a Proverbs 31 woman, your heart should ache for the lost, the helpless and broken. God gifted me with intense empathy. I used to think of it as a curse, but now I realize the blessing of my empathetic heart. I used to pray to God a verse from Hillsong’s Hosanna:
“Heal my heart and make it clean.
Open up my eyes to the things unseen.
Show me how to love like you have loved me.
Break my heart for what breaks yours.
Everything I am for your kingdoms cause
as I walk from earth into eternity.”
If you struggle with empathy and compassion toward your coworkers, family, or the people driving next to you on the highway I encourage you to pray those words. God loves you without condition. It’s a love that is impossible to understand. How can you not feel compassion for others when you experience a love as deep as His?
“She opens up her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.“
– Proverbs 31:20
7. A Proverbs 31 Woman is… God-fearing.
Of these 7 Ways to be a Proverbs 31 Woman in 2020, this point may be most important. Fearing the Lord does not mean you are afraid of Him. God is the Creator of the Universe, and His power and majesty deserve a level of reverence an respect. That’s what fearing God means. A Proverbs 31 Woman understand who God is not just as a loving Father, but as a just King.
Your relationship with God should come first, always. The world is going to present you with a host of distractions, but never forget who sits on the throne of your heart.
“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.“
