Scriptures to Soothe the Homemaker’s Heart
Do you want to know a secret? All I ever wanted to be when I was a little girl was a mom and a homemaker. (An an author, but we are working on that bit.) I currently get to live out my dream at home with my toddler, and yet some days leave me so drained I wonder why I chose to stay at home at all. I wrote this blog post about Scriptures to Soothe the Homemaker’s Heart for me, but hopefully it will help others like me who need a little encouragement.
1. “Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house…” – Psalm 128:3
As a stay-at-home mama sometimes I can get a little lost in the monotony of my job. I’m cleaning the same dishes, singing the same songs and chugging through the same routines. It can seem pointless. But the truth is, I’m just sowing seeds. My actions each day show my daughter how to be kind and responsible. Hopefully they show her the love of Jesus. So on days when I feel a little lost in the monotony, I ask myself… am I being fruitful?
2. “And the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.'” – Genesis 2:18
Not having a “proper job” really wears on me sometimes. I’m used to contributing significantly to our income, but that just isn’t the case anymore. Right now I’m at home with my daughter, and that’s a whole career in itself. God designed me to the be the helpmeet for my husband, and I find that a beautiful thing. What I’m doing around the house and with our daughter helps my husband to focus on his job and to thrive. Being his helper is enough.
3. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going. ” -Ecclesiastes 9:10
It’s taken me some time to re-adjust to the idea that my life as a homemaker is enough. I don’t have this booming career by the worlds standards, but I am able to do this beautiful, difficult, incredible thing by staying at home. I’m choosing not to put all that I have into this season at home, and not spend my time feeling less-than because I am not in an office. It’s okay to just be a homemaker. No side hustles. Just giving your all at home.
4. “…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” – Phillipians 4:6
Every day is different as a mom, so I don’t always get a quality quiet time. For example, today I accidentally set off the fire alarm while my toddler was napping…. so much for a productive nap time. (Don’t worry, I was cooking carrots in the oven and we are all okay.) If I allow myself to give into the anxiety and unpredictability of my child, I would be a mess. Instead, I choose to pray throughout my day and continually hand over all my worries. Being in communication with my Heavenly Father throughout the day helps to ease my weary heart.
5. “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…” -2 Corinthians 10:5
The final verse in my list of Scriptures to Soothe the Homemaker’s Heart is 2 Corinthians 10:5. There are days when it is difficult not to compare myself to other moms or to compare my child to other children. Rather than allow myself to be caught in that comparison game, I am working on taking every thought captive. Everyone parents differently and every child grows at a different rate. I shouldn’t care what other people think, because God’s opinion is the one that matters.
