Simple Ways to Entertain Your Toddler Outside
My favorite part of Spring (other than flowers) is playing outside with my girl. I love going to the zoo and park, taking her on walks and learning about bugs. There are many Simple Ways to Entertain Your Toddler Outside this Spring and Summer. Read about some of our favorite below!
1. Sidewalk Chalk
My daughter is two years old and she is finally becoming interested in sidewalk chalk (I mean, without trying to eat it). We love to draw pictures together, practice shapes and colors and trace our hands. Then the rain or water hose washes it all away. It’s the best.
2. Bubbles
You can never have too many bubbles. Not only is it a fun activity to share with your toddler, but did you know that mosquitos and other pests are deterred by the smell of soap? We bought a bubble machine to save ourselves from blowing on bubble wands for an hour, and it has been an excellent investment.
3. Water Table
You can find water tables everywhere, but in my opinion the most cost effective place to find them is on Facebook Marketplace or at a garage sale. People are always selling gently used ones that will work great! I mean, it is going to be outside after all. Water tables are fun, but also help keep your kiddos cool on warmer days outside.
4. Just Wander
One of my favorite things to do with my daughter is just wander. We go to a park or hiking trail or around the neighborhood and just walk, look at flowers and birds and bugs. She tells me stories and we enjoy the fresh air. It’s lovely.
5. Playhouse
To learn more about how we transformed a playhouse, be sure to check out this blog post. I was inspired by a children’s book to create a beautiful play space for my daughter. To be honest, it really needs to be cleaned out after all the reset storms, but she still loves playing in her little house.
6. Garden
Gardening is a new journey for my little family. We’ve been trying to include Ronia in the process, so she can learn all about seeds and where our food comes from. It’s been really stressful at times, because she doesn’t quite understand how to be gentle with our plants, but watching her learn is just so cool.
7. Look for Bugs & Other Creatures
Have I mentioned we like looking for bugs? We find all sorts of critters in our backyard from grasshoppers and bunnies to turtles and hummingbirds, caterpillars and ladybugs. Every time we find something new I use it as a learning opportunity and she soaks up the new information.
8. Play in the Sand
The final idea in my list of Simple Ways to Entertain Your Toddler Outside is to play in the sand. Many parks have sand pits, but you could easily create one of your own at home or even go to a local beach. I have found that playing in the sand is one of Ronia’s favorite sensory activities. Just remember to wash hands after.
