The Best Books to Prepare Your Preschooler for School
We are back after a long break and ready to share all about our new favorite books. Our daughter started preschool again last week, so I put together all our favorite school books. Read more about The Best Books to Prepare Your Preschooler for School below!

1. Pete the Kitty’s First Day of Preschool by Kimberly and James Dean
My daughters teacher read a Pete the Cat book on the first day of school and she was thrilled. We’d never read the series at home! I wasn’t sure she’d like the illustrations to be honest, but as it turns out I was wrong. We might have a new favorite on our hands.
2. Time for School Mouse! by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond
Time for School Mouse is one of those simple easy reads for a fast bedtime. We all need those, right? Our daughter likes to see what mouse gets up to, and we like how short and sweet the stories are. It’s a win-win. It’s also such a classic series, am I right?
3. How to Dinosaurs Go to School? by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague
The “How do Dinosaurs” series is so clever. They show what a dinosaur (or kid) should and should not do in the classroom. For example, do dinosaurs interrupt class with show and tell? No, a dinosaur doesn’t! I find this book to be helpful in talking about preschooler classroom rules.
4. Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney
Our list from last year had a different Llama Llama book, but I thought Misses Mama would be a good edition to this years list. Sometimes going to school can make kids very nervous. Our daughter floats between complete confidence at drop-off and being inconsolable. Llama Llama Misses Mama is a good book to help her remember that mama always comes back to get her, and she can have lots of fun with her friends in the meantime!
5. Time for School by Ruth Birnbaum
Time for school is a touch-and-feel book, which may or may not be something your child enjoys. The story is simple and encouraging for kids (or little monsters) who are new to school. My daughter has read this book so many times it’s falling apart, but at least it’s well loved!
6. Welcome to Unicorn School by Rose Cobden and Loretta Schauer
Welcome to Unicorn School is a new favorite in our household. It’s an enchanting story about a little unicorn who is excited about the first day of school, but makes a mistake and is self-conscious. Another child in his class is kind and helps him find the courage to try again. My preschooler is obsessed with all the varieties of unicorns, so this book is a 10/10 for us!
7. How to Get Your Octopus to School by Becky Scharnhorst and Jaclyn Sinquett
We received this book in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and I’m so glad we did. How to Get Your Octopus to school is reminiscent of If You Give a Dog a Donut. There’s always something that doesn’t go quite right, but you always arrive at the destination. I was expecting the octopus to join the child at school, but instead they ended up at octopus school and it was absolutely precious.
8. The Yellow Bus by Loren Long
The Yellow Bus isn’t necessarily a back to school book, but it’s a beautiful story about the life cycle of a bus and all the life it carries. The illustrations are gorgeous and thought-provoking as well. This book had my daughter asking lots of questions and exploring, which I always love.
