Unique Christmas Traditions You Should Try This Year
Are you looking to try something new this Christmas? Do you want to start a new tradition with your family? If you need inspiration for the upcoming holiday season, below are a few Unique Christmas Traditions You Should Try This Year. Establishing a fun tradition can help build closer relationships and make memories that will last for years to come. Merry (early) Christmas!
1. Buy Yourself a Bag of Cozy’s
It wouldn’t feel right not to include a personal family tradition, so… every year for many years the cousins in my family go last minute shopping on Christmas Eve day. At lunchtime they take a break from shopping and meet at Cozy’s to buy a dozen bags of burgers. If you haven’t eaten at Cozy’s, then you should know the burgers are tiny and very onion-y. Not my favorite, but my family clearly loves them. So if you are looking to add a little onion taste (and smell) to your holiday season, try a bag of Cozy’s.
2. Get Yourself an “Edna”
My sister’s best friend has a fun family tradition. Her family has a fake chicken named Edna that lays “eggs” every Christmas. Except the eggs are actually ornaments for each member of the family. How cute is that? I love the idea of establishing a new tradition that is completely and utterly unique to your family. Even if it’s not an Edna, don’t be afraid to think outside the box this year!
3. Camp Under the Christmas Lights
Everyone loves to sit by the light of the Christmas tree, so why not go the extra mile and camp out in your living room this year? Throw pillows and blankets on the floor, make a fort and play your favorite Christmas movie. This unique tradition is an excellent idea if you have kids. What’s better than the soft glow of Christmas tree lights? I mean honestly you took the time to assemble everything. You should fully enjoy the aesthetic.
4. Gingerbread House Competition
Give everyone in your family a small gingerbread house kit and lots of decoration ingredients. Then watch as everyone’s most competitive side emerges. You could even designate one person to be the judge of the competition and have a special award made. If you are looking for a unique and festive tradition for your family this year, a gingerbread house competition might be ideal.
5. Create a Family Bucket List
Another unique Christmas tradition to try this year is making a family bucket list. Have a family meeting and get everyone’s input. What do they want to do this year? Compile all the answers into the ultimate family bucket list for Christmas. Then have some fun together checking everything off the list by Christmas Eve. What I love about this tradition is the comradery. Everyone gets to do something they want to do!
6. Read Scripture By Candlelight
It’s important to remember the reason for the season. Keep the purpose of Christmas at the forefront of your mind this year by reading scripture as a family each night before bed. You could read the Christmas story or various other passages, but the important thing is to open your Bible. I love this tradition, because it infuses the presence of God into your Christmas season.
7. Volunteer or Donate as a Family
Speaking of remembering the reason for the season, volunteering is an excellent tradition to begin with your family this year. There are so many people in need all over the world who never get to experience the wonder of the holidays. Bring a bit of Christmas cheer to others this year and do it together. It will not only build stronger relationships and memories, but will teach your kids valuable lessons about giving back.
8. Have a Family Game Night
If you and your family love a good board game, then I highly recommend a Christmas-themed gamed night. Get in your coziest PJ’s, turn on some holiday tunes and have a good time together with all the best Christmas-y games. If you aren’t sure what to play, there are plenty of fun unique Christmas part game ideas on Pinterest. Just make it your own!
9. Take an Ugly Christmas Sweater Photo
Everyone loves a good family photo on Christmas. This year, change up your traditional photo by adding some ugly Christmas sweaters. You could purchase them or have everyone make their own. Then on Christmas Day, gather around the tree and pose in your holiday best. Have some fun with it and maybe have a theme each year. Again, it’s all about the memories.
10. Have a Thrift Store Christmas
My final idea for the list of Unique Christmas Traditions You Should Try This Year is having a thrift store Christmas. What I love about this idea is that it is eco and budget friendly. Are you looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle in the new year? Then this might be the perfect tradition for your family. It’s also a good idea for a Christmas party with friends.
Instead of spending a lot of money on Amazon or in commercial stores, try finding the perfect gift in your local thrift store. It’s an excellent way to save money and help the planet.
