4 Ways You Can Support Your Mom Friends
How can you best support your mom friends? Being a mama is not an easy job, but with the right people around to support you it can be much less overwhelming. This month I talked to five of my mama friends and asked them how they like to be supported. Based on their answers, here are 4 Ways You can Support Your Mom Friends.
Oh, and don’t forget to check out the @hyggefamilyprints page on Etsy for everything from printable calendars to kids activities.
1. Be Real and Vulnerable
All the mamas I spoke with this month expressed the importance of not feeling judged. Your mom friend wants to be able to talk openly about her struggles and pain. She wants to be heard. You can support your mom friend by allowing her to express her struggles. No mom is perfect, and your friend understands that. She just wants to be able to have a real conversation and be vulnerable with you. She wants you to do the same. Share what frustrates you and find solidarity in that struggle. Sometimes being a good friend just means listening well.
2. Show Up to Help
Another way to support your mom friend is to give her a little help. Does she need an hour to run to the grocery store? Offer to watch the kiddos. Does she have a new baby and no time to cook dinner? Bring by a covered dish. Did her power go out? Offer up your house as a refuge until the lights are back on. The important thing is you ask first. Ask your mom friend what she needs help with and then show up to help. Don’t be flaky. Helping with a simple chore or task means more to your her then a fancy gift.
3. Be Understanding and Patient
Mom life is a busy life. If you text your mom friend and don’t get a response right away, don’t assume she is ignoring you on purpose. She’s probably chasing a toddler or soothing her baby to sleep or running her teenager to practice. Support your mom friend by giving her a little grace. I’m sure she would love nothing better than to talk on the phone with you for hours, but there’s a little life that needs her full attention. Sometimes mom life takes up all her time and you may not see your friend for awhile. That does not mean you friendship is over, it’s just transforming into a new type of relationship. Be understanding and patient with your mom friends.
4. Pray for Her
The most important thing you can do to support your mom friend is to pray for her. On our own we are incapable, but with God all things are possible. Hold your friends up to God in prayer and ask Him to grant them wisdom, patience, hope, or whatever they may need in this season. It might even be a good idea to reach out to your friends once a week and ask them if they have any specific prayer requests. Then when you do actually pray for them send a quick text to let them know. There’s nothing better then knowing someone is thinking of you from a distance. Of the 4 Ways You Can Support Your Mom Friends, prayer is the most important.
