Why it’s Important to Spend Time Outside
The weather in Kansas right now is sweltering, and I am very much looking forward to those fall days when we take long hikes, play in the yard, pick pumpkins and just wander. Did you know that spending more time outside can not only be beneficial for your mental health but for your physical health as well? Read below to discover Why it’s Important to Spend Time Outside.
1. Better Sleep
Your body’s internal clock follows the sun. Getting outside during the day can help you feel more tired at bedtime, shorten the time it takes to fall asleep, and improve the overall quality of your rest.
2. Reduced Seasonal Depression
Studies show that light therapy can improve symptoms of seasonal depression. Lately the summer afternoons have been so hot in Kansas that we’ve been spending less time outside. I can certainly tell a difference in my toddlers mood as well as my own.
3. Open Your Mind
I don’t know about you, but there is something about getting out in nature that clears my head. It opens my mind to how vast the world is and how much there is to explore. You can learn all sorts of things about nature and yourself when you spend a little time outside.
4. Boosted Immunity
Did you know that when you spend time outside you actually boost your immunity? Yep. According to WebMD.com, “Many plants put substances, including organic compounds called phytoncides, into the air that seem to boost immune function. Sunlight also seems to energize special cells in your immune system called T cells that help fight infection.”
