Why it’s Important to Read with Your Kids
My mom used to read to us every night before bed, and those moments remain one of my most cherished memories. Reading to your children can have many benefits for them and for you. Read below to discover Why it’s Important to Read with Your Kids. I shared my top four favorite reasons, but there are countless more!
1. Bonding Time
Like I mentioned previously, reading with my mom is one of the highlights of my childhood. She also used to take us to get books at the library during the summer. That time spent with my mom and books helped built out relationship. It was good bonding time! Reading to your kids is an excellent way to spend focused one-on-one time with them.
2. Builds a Love of Reading
We have been reading to our daughter multiple times a day since she was born. Now, at only 2.5, she loves books. She looks forward to our reading time at night and I can often find her tucked away in her playroom or bed, just looking at a book. That love for books is something that was cultivated and I hope will continue to grow.
3. Cognitive and Language Development
Studies show that children who are read to score higher in language skills and cognitive development. Other research shows that this link extends all through childhood and into teen years. So your teenager may have a high IQ because you read to them when they were little.
4. Creativity
Reading to your little one opens their mind to a while new world. Children have such vivid imaginations, and I have seen my daughter’s imagination explode the more we read together. She loves to act our the stories and repeat the words to us. It’s important to read to your kids, because it will boost their creativity.
